Berlin Balls: Germany vs Poland vs Portugal

In Germany, this sweet may be called Berliner Pfannkuchen (cake pan of Berlin), Berliner Ballen (Berlin ball) or just Berliner (Berlin), outside Berlin. It’s made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top

In Poland, are designated as Paczki and Poles have traditionally eat them on the Thursday preceding the carnival celebrations.

In Portugal, they are in almost all the pastries and unlike those in Germany, they are filled with pastry cream. The most famous are in Viana do Castelo,  in “Pastelaria Natário”. But what distinguishes this cake from Natário’s of all others? I had to figure it out! It’s undoubtedly the cinnamon, that little dash in the dough makes all the difference! Of course the fact that they are small, always piping hot and with a very soft dough make them simply irresistible!

Regarding those in Germany and Poland, I’ll give a little jump there and tell you what I thought 🙂

See you soon!!!
